End of August update

JapaneseTruffles- good variety, will try Black Pear Russian origin to see if it different
Purple Russian- keeper, good production, midseason early, good growth consider my fight with septoria
Paul Robeson- keeper forever, got this year with Amazon Chocolate 105 days from seed. Still has some greenies
Gypsy- keeper, midseason, sweeter that Amazon Choc, likes cool weather, slightly later than AC
Amazon Chocolate- keeper, 105 days from seed!!! Fairly large for that early and that tasty tomato.
my fav so far in terms of taste, was early for this size, likes cool weather, was not that great with septoria
Black vernissage
tough skin, taste good otherwise, skip for next year
Missouri pink love apple
good steady production, prolific, plenty of greenies yet, midseaon with WOW for me, seesm did well with septoria
Pink Honey
as not productive as I would like but early midseason, taste excellent, will keep
Big Rainbow- one of the late ones for me
has lots of going now but so far few small fruits produced. Nature Riddle seems to be pretty similar but slightly earlier and better production so might go on the shelf for next year
Tigerella
have better things to try
Nature RIddle
will keep, late, large citrycy, got nice large ones quite a few
Riesentraube
great one, very healthy considering septoria, cept I like Isis candy much more and they both later cherries for me, I just do not need that many cherries
Taste of Italy' Cuore Di Bue
http://www.tmseeds.com/product/Pomodoro_Tomato_Cuore_di_Bue/Taste_of_Italy
keeper, steady, midseason and still working, great taste
San Marzano
gone
Azochka
keeper, quite early for size and excellent taste, seems pulling through whatever weather comes
Roman Candle
good paste but I think I might keep banana legs and orange paste instead
HHHS
http://www.rareseeds.com/hssiao-his-hung-shih-tomato/
new one this year, meaty for cherry, prolific as described, taste was they say balanced, could load tons into salad without overloading the taste buds. I have Medovaya Kaplya to try next year though
Sungold and Momotaro are two hybrids I keep.
Blue p20
one of all time favs
Ildi
gone, very bland taste
Isis
favorite, keeper, super!!!
Gardeners Delight
like it but have some other early cherries to try
Black Russian
http://www.thompson-morgan.com/vegetables/vegetable-seeds/tomato-seeds/tomato-black-russian-heritage/319TM
I got 3 types of different tomatoes out of that commercial package, what picture shows regular leaf, potato leaf and small golf ball delightful dark red.
Black Krim
Have too many darks and BK is just not that great producer this year
Marianne Peace
def has to be started early and WOW, the only tomato I am still waiting on. Love it though
Lemon wonder
well, it was from trade, it is Not Lemon wonder and neither is Limonny, small golf size mid season dark yellow, juicy and colorful, keeper but at loss what name it is
Banana legs
for determined tom it id well and good paste tomato, keeper
Peach
good, beautiful in salads,
Giant yellow belgium
was not giant but nice variety
Hungarian heart
so so this year but my steady keeper
Tarasenko ubileyniy
midseason, nice, no WOW factor, possibly keep
Green zebra cherry- nice, will skip for next year since have other cherries to try
StPierre- nice, midseason, moderate yield, no wow factor but good enough to keep
Pierce Tom Pride- love this one, buttery dark taste, one of my new favs
Hog heart- keeper late paste
Orange paste- keeper, super like!
BrandywinexStupice- love, keeper, late midseason
Nikolaevna- love, keeper, just your old fashioned tomato taste
Tenessie Surprise- just got first one, jury still out
Novogogoshari- this one hollow for stuffing, too small for good stuffer, at least this year

Update on August production

well, still cooking, and canning and freezing so far so good. New recipes needed.
Got my first Nicolaevna YUM!!!!!!!!!! Great old fashioned tomato taste.
Momotaro is yum! has tough skin this year?
St Pierre is no wow factor for me, orange paste is delish!
Pierce Pride is amazing buttery dark chocolaty, loved it, am getting second splash of produce there, def a keeper.  Black vernisage and Momotaro were thick skinned too much but while Momotaro is big to eat skin out, BV is just too small so jury still out.
Brandywine Jan is great, got couple nice big ones and more coming, Tennessie supr still green...
Couple of unknown tomatoes- Package of Black russian produced 3 different kinds of plants, one is small round tomatoes, very good taste, second what they present on the picture and third is potato leafed plant... hmmm
Love my Cuor di Bue and still good producer.
Nature riddle is Very prolific with giant fruits, taste is excellent. Big rainbow slightly disappointed as size is less and later that Nature Riddle.

Current thoughts on production

Been fighting Septoria here, not winning but schlepping along, not the best but not the worst so far every few days bag of toms ready to go. So far my thoughts for next year
Truffles -Will try black pear possibly different Russian variety
Purple Russian- keeper, producing well, good tolerance, great taste
Paul Robeson-keeper, love it
Gypsy- new one, keeper, early midseason, more sweet than BK
Amazon Chocolate- best so far taste, not so great on Septoria or seems like cool weather more, def keeper
Black vernissage- thick skin and mealy, jury still out
Missouri pink love apple- good and reliable, keeper
Pink Honey- did pretty well, although not high producing, taste great, likes cool weather as many russian varieites seems
Big Rainbow- just starting, plant seems doing ok
Tigerella- have other things to try next year
Nature RIddle- just starting, jury still out
Riesentraube- keeper, probably healthiest plant so far
Taste of Italy' Cuore Di Bue- got it loaded with greenies, keeper
/Pomodoro_Tomato_Cuore_di_Bue/Taste_of_Italy
San Marzano- will replace with Redorta
Azochka- keeper, early and taste great, did not do well with Septoria
Roman Striped, did well after weather got warmer, looking better as time goes by and loaded
HHHS- mmm, have other things to try
http://www.rareseeds.com/hssiao-his-hung-shih-tomato/
Sungold- forever keeper
Blue p20- love it, though did not well with leaf problem, plants look sickly but pumping tomatoes
Ildi- have better things to try
Isis- same, will try something else
Gardeners Delight- keeper, good resistance, early and fruiting well, one plant is more than enough
Black Russian- just broke colors couple days ago will see
Black Krim- will replace, too many dark varieties and no tolerance to Septoria
Marianne Peace- still green
Lemon wonder, ended up being Limonny, def a keeper, great taste and size, midseason early
Banana legs- will have to get something else, was totally determinate this year still 2 ft tall
Peach- like the fruit, but it seem doing so so as plant, last year was the same, just not enough strength
Giant yellow belgium, still green, not sure
Hungarian heart- keeper forever
Tarasenko ubileyniy- like, medium producer, good size and taste, keeper
Green zebra cherry- possible, if nothing better comes alone, good tolerance to weather, good producer so far
Novogogoshari- will replace, just do not know what to do with stuffing tomatoes
Green Frost- kinda keeper, green toms are not my love but good taste

First salad

First totally home grown salad- lettuce, tomatoes, zukes and cukes. Two cukes today, more tomatoes on the vines blushing. With weather being slightly cooler might see more bloom and new tomatoes growing. Few ¨eggplants are growing too and some of the peppers finally starting to turn yellow.
 Life is good!

House garden pics

Haul from today

well, things are moving Purple Russian is getting a blush, Novogogoshari, and ate my first Green frost while Green zebr cherry will probably be in couple days
First couple of maters from Gardeners delight

First haul

really not first we had some Sungold and HHHS already but cherry does not counts
so here it is 2 Paul Robeson and 4 Amazon Chocolate. AC is splitting, note to self remove from the vine as soon as first blush shows which I had for few days already. Both types were ripe. Amazon wins by taste so far just enough zest to not want any salt. OTOH PR still might improve.

Cautiously optimistic

Update so far.  Still have some septoria. Kept Serenade and copper spray as method of choice.  Added  microbial inoculants and foliar spray with actinovate and potassium bicarb. Also added fertilizers Happy frog veggie  formula or Jobs organic with biozome. Gave good drinks of compost tea with fish fertilizer and some bat guano 10-1-1. Finally seeing nice green foliage on my midget  indet plants. They are loaded with fruit though and I ate my first Sungold so timeframe  is still same as last years

Are tomatoes aquatic plants now?

Well, we had another tropical storm and little drizzle just about every day.  After treatment there is plenty of yellow foliage but am sure it is overwatering by Mother Nature  as we had 16" over the reuglar rainfall so far.
Plants are getting extra nutrition by adding some top dressing compost and bat guano with  beneficial microbes. Am sure it is last treatment for the season of fertilizer as our season is short.
So far septoria is at bay. Will keep an eye for it. Tomatoes are behaving in determinate way, although am happily seeing bees buzzing and lots of yellow flower as well as greenies toms. Not one broke color yet though.

Septoria

Dealing with what I think Septoria is, used copper spray yesterday. There is one or two green toms on about half the plants. Hoping the weather will keep dry. Ordered some Actinovate and potassium sulfate for the future. Reading like crazy on all fungal and bacterial issues, there should be some beneficial stuff that can be introduced into the garden to deal with it.

Garden update

Used milk and baking soda to cover the leaves, so far so good. Weeded and pruned bottom leaves. I just might get Sungold by July 4th this year as well but next year all cherry- grapes will have to be started earlier. Noted one green tom on Black Krim and forgot to look at second plant. Some leaves still look curled so I will stay away from doing anything else for now and just let weather take care of things. Will need trellises in a week and some plants are reaching over 4th tier cages.

New green tomatoes seen!

So as of today Amazing chocolate WOW has about 6 green toms and regular one has about 2 seems like really prolific variety!
Green toms are seen on Gypsy-both plants, Black Vernissage, Paul Robeson, Sungold- both, Truffle- both, Green Frost, Banana legs, Roman Candle and  HHHS. Black Krim has couple buds that look like they took.
San Marzano is going away next year and will be replaced by San Marzano Redorta.
Ildi and Gold nugget seems stalling and they should be far far ahead by now... Ildi was original seed and GN was mine.
Bed closest to potatoes got early blight signs, so leaves are taken off and watered with milk and baking soda treatment. We will see.

Paul Robeson

HHHS almost reaching his 4th cage tier

physiological drooping leaves from too much water

healthy Azoychka in bloom
Green tom on Amazing Chocolate

Am glad this rain was not anything special. Have few droopy toms but most of them  look just fabulous. Found another green tomato on WOW Paul Robeson.
My initial thought that I could create some kind of spreadsheet what is good and not so good for Skokie plots might not be useful for anyone but me. Looking at other people plants I am coming to thinking it is more about what you do with soil and your timing and less about variety...
Paul Robeson fist tom

And the winner is!!!!!!!

Amazing Chocolate  from wall of water,  planted  out about May 1 does have 2 green tomatoes going!!!! Mucho excitement!
So far I have seen mixed reviews regarding what season this tom will belong to but looks like wall of water moved it into earlier group.
Oh yeah and first potato bush has started to bloom today, I got some early and some mid variety from Menards, need to check with Ann what those special toms from Baker creek are doing.

Sunday, June 2, 2013

I guess I should be happy that there are only few plants blooming now because we are in the long haul of the rainy days with tons of humidity. I have to see if anything left on Amazing Chocolate pollen so I can still shake it a bit. Temps are also dropping below 60 at nights. Mmmm....

Friday, May 31, 2013

Here is reference link to mineral deficiencies. I always plant my toms waaay to tightly to each other and always have BER. Will attempt to watch  this year and monitor better.

I went today to Home Depot and found that they started to carry Superthrive, not the cheapest but bought myself bottle.
Also Menards is the one store that does try to carry organic fertilizers
I particularly like these
 and these
http://garden-safe.infinitylawnandgarden.com/products/plant-food/tomato-vegetable-organic-plant-food
So new 2013 season started. Am hoping to blog  more this year and document changes so I can remember. Started slightly over 30 varieties of toms started  beginning of April, which went into ground May 14. My 6 wall of water systems went in  April 26. So far wall of water look bushier and taller but not by much. Amazing Chocolate is blooming, funny part I have two plants one in the wall of water system and one without... well both of them are blooming! Many plants are thinking about blooming too but it seems neither Gold nugget, Tigerella  or Sungold will be winners this year. Green Frost from Ann was blooming when I got it.
